3 Catwalk Beauty Trends That Will Make You Forget Middle School Ever Happened
I spend way too much time thinking about middle school. I like to psychoanalyze myself back in the day in the hopes that it will bring me to some great revelation about my current issues ("maybe I really AM extroverted!" or "boys named Kyle have ALWAYS been awful to me!"). It's like I believe that middle school me possessed some fundamental quality of authenticity that has since been lost in my quest for higher education and professional success. Is it stupid? Probably. But I still do it.
So it's nothing new that I've been thinking about middle school. But recently, I've been kind of obsessed with dissecting the trends that were popular then. And it seems really unfair. Low rise jeans? Matte skin? Frosted lip gloss? Blue eyeshadow? Are you serious? Now, of course, I'm out of college and have enough life perspective to understand what trends are, but I really wish I had been in puberty in a time where dewy skin and high-waisted jeans were popular, because damn.
Now that you've listened to my rant about totally being born in the wrong generation, let's look at some of the incredible runway looks that the fall/winter 2016 runway shows have been serving up.
1. Alexander McQueen's Dreamy, Dewy Magic
Alexander McQueen has been seriously killing it lately. Sarah Burton, who took over creative directing the line in 2010, has been delving into magic, dreams, and fairytales to create her ultra-feminine collections. The 2016 McQueen girl is a creature of the night who drifts or sleepwalks between reality and her dreams. Shimmer, embroidered stars, crescent moons, butterflies, and good-luck charms were all over this show. In keeping with that theme, the makeup in this show is super dewy, rosy, and light.
Get the Look: Throw away your Kardashian Kontour! Toss out your bronzer! This look is all about the skin. Start out by drinking your eight cups of water a day, and make sure you take off your makeup every night before you go to sleep. This will give you a fresh, glowy face to start out with. Prime your face with a good moisturizing primer, then blend your favorite highlighter onto your cheekbones and the bridge of your nose. Go back in with some cream blush for a slight flush and to bring some dimension to your face. Prime your eyes, and use your fingers to apply a light, imprecise dusting of powder blush and brown eyeshadow over your lid, into your crease, and slightly on to your browbone, then line your eyes with your favorite pencil liner. (It's okay if it isn't perfect; remember this look is all about that light, je-ne-sais-quoi thing.) Now, here's my favorite part: get your jar of Vaseline or Aquaphor or whatever you have, and smear it all your eyelids for a DIY glossy eye. I'm obsessed with this look right now; it's so French and fresh and editorial without being unwearable. Plus, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than spending the $20 bucks for the Milk Eye Vinyl that basically does the same thing.
2. Alexander Wang's Slick, Dark Mall Goth
According to an article I read somewhere online, the look for this collection was a "wanted woman in a lawless land," and the style was inspired by goth teenagers smoking pot. So basically I'm sold! And yes, I realize this is sort of referencing middle school forays into Hot Topic, but it's still dope, because honestly, nothing says female empowerment like destroying the idea that we need to be conventionally attractive. It's beauty for you, not for the boys.
Get the Look: Um... don't conceal your undereye circles? This is all about looking like you're sick and tired of everyone's shit because WHY WOULDN'T YOU BE. Make sure you skip the black eyeliner to emphasize that this looks is modern, not middle school 2.0. Take a taupe eyeshadow and use a brush to line all around your eyes, then go back in and smudge the line for a messy look. You can also go back in with a kind of faded out peach if you really want to go all-out pink eye for this. Then, pile on the mascara, and you're ready to go scowling out around town.
3. Crying Glitter with Rodarte
Maybe this is just proof exactly how obsessed I already am with glitter in general, but I think this look is super wearable, and Kate and Laura Mulleavy from Rodarte apparently agree with me. For a couple seasons now, they've been dabbling with sheer mauve tones, romance, and fairy dust (which makes for complementary tonality with their sheer, peasanty stuff of late, as well as for good contrast with their darker, more structured pieces). Somewhere a couple seasons ago, I read that the Rodarte makeup artists were really inspired by the sheen and glow that your skin right after you've cried. Great beauty tip for those of us that are overly emotional!
Get the Look: It depends on exactly how you want to bring this to life, but I think my favorite versions of glitter tears involves the heavy cat-eye. So in that case, you'll want to prime your eyes with a good eye primer before you apply your liquid eyeliner. I know I keep talking about this, but it's super important, and you really can't skip this step. An eye primer is tacky in texture and skin colored, which makes your eyeshadow colors pop and also stay on twice as long as they normally would. One time I partied all night and crashed on some stranger's couch, and when I woke up the next morning my eye makeup looked exactly the same as it did when I put it on the night before. If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will. After eyeliner, use some roll-on glitter or my personal favorite, liquid glitter eyeliner from NYX (super cheap!) and apply liberally. Go forth and sparkle.
One of my favorite things about these three trends are how much they defy beauty norms. Kardashian beauty has been in for what feels like forever, and there's something that feels very modern to me about forgetting perfection and getting messy with your makeup: using your fingers to put it on, making use with what you have, and emphasizing your features with artistic creativity instead of trying to make your face look like everyone else's. Nothing says 2016 like drawing your inspiration from goth kids and crying your eyes out in bed at night. Turning your emotional turmoil and boy problems into A Look is really very feminist, if you think about it. I just wish I had spent less time in middle school trying to make my skin ultra-matte and more time embracing dewiness and glitter and not trying to force my hips into low-rise jeans....but that's another story for another time!
What are your favorite trends from the Pre-Fall 2016 runways? Let us know in the comments!
Why Camel Should Be Your Go-To Clothing Color
Fall of 2015 brought us some of the best trends we've had in a long time. From matte lipsticks to the return of neutral colors, we finally had a season filled with unforgettable statement pieces, themes and trends to try on for good size. The one trend that stuck to me the most was the arrival of camel domination. It was subtle, effective, and it made me love flaunting my brown skin much more. Camel is now the color of my nails, my backpack, and my favorite faux glasses (I use to shield my over-active tearducts from intense Asheville winds). And as spring slides thru, I will hold on to my dear love for camel, keeping my looks warm and different while everyone is locked on florals.
So why should you love camel, you ask? It's a neutral color with flair, personality, and versatility. Anyone can rock black, whites before Labor Day and even your everyday gray (don't even get me started on my love affair with gray.) But camel looks like you actually tried. It'll pull the warm tones out of your skin and leave the reds behind, it'll fix your edges and fix your life. Not only does it warm, but it stays quiet. You can easily pair camel with another signature color. I typically pair my camel accents with my deep purples, burgundies, and forest greens. It looks professional, but not too crazy serious. Camel will make you feel like a fashion blogger. (because, you know, that's just the coolest thing ever.) Also, guys look great in camel. Exhibit A, and the only example you need: Empire stars rocking camel for GQ.
What should you buy in camel? The best look rocking this color that has hints of cinnamon and nutmeg would be with a classic camel-colored peacoat. It's sleek, looks great with all black, and it can be dressed up or dressed down with a few quick changes. But since the season of coats are coming to a close, try buying camel in your favorite accent piece. A camel shirt can be tucked in to achieve a duochrome outfit with jeans or a nice dark color, or a camel belt or suede camel boot can jazz up a casual outfit. If you like to go bold, try a pair of cute tan or camel pants. Pair them with an all white sneaker or a classy black boot to go hard or go cute.
A bad selfie of ya girl.
What do I rock in camel? My camel backpack is my ride-or-die, from Urban Outfitters along with my wide-frame glasses, speckled in black. My camel shirt, flowy and lined vertically, is a signature Forever 21 piece, perfect with some casual thick leggings and chelsea boots. I also have a great camel-colored crop top sweater from Forever 21, that I love to wear with high waisted jeans and combat boots. Camel has also inspired me to dabble in highlighting and bronzing makeup, accenting my golden tones a little more to stay on par with my outfit. It'll warm you up and keep you glowing.

Sweater Weather: Guide to Winter in NYC
This is my first winter in New York and while I was bracing myself for glacial temperatures sometime soon after I moved here in November, it has proved to be perfectly balmy and unseasonably warm for the past few months.
But, it is starting to get seriously cold here and I’ve had to figure out how to stay warm through some trial and error.
Conclusions:
Conclusions:
- Layering is key. The subway will be the death of you if you can’t shed a few layers, or at least shed your hat, scarf and gloves. I usually have at least a sweater and a long sleeve shirt on under my coat, but sometimes you may need to bulk up even more.
- Gloves: Get gloves. Get big gloves. Get gloves that you feel slightly silly wearing because maybe you’re going to have to spark a cigarette or check your phone. Do not be led astray by the smart phone gloves, do not opt for the cute knit gloves, go straight for the waterproof exterior - lined interior ones that have a cold rating (often the good ones will have a tag that shows the weather they’re meant for) of cold to icy. The cigarette can wait - you’ll thank me later.
- Coats: I personally have an aversion to the “puffer jackets” that are ubiquitous here, but to be honest they’re probably your best bet. I have a friend who has an ankle length one and she just spent the weekend in Iowa where the high was -2 degrees fahrenheit and she was perfectly snuggly. If you don’t opt for the puffer (I didn’t), you still probably want to get a long coat, at least thigh-knee length. The reason? While you’re probably going to have a sweater or two under your coat, your legs are only going to have one layer of cloth between them and the freezing cold, and you want to protect them. A long coat will do this, and you will be grateful. Coats with hoods are also great. Basically the more of your body you can cover the better. (You can also go hard core and wear long johns under your jeans, I used to do this sometimes when I lived in Asheville, and I may have to break them out soon.)
- Hats/Scarves: Even if you have a hood on your coat you’re probably going to want a hat. There are a lot of cute hats out there to be had, but at a certain point even the best of us have to abandon fashion for practicality, and thick knit hats and ear flaps and some things to look for. Big scarves are great, but make sure you can tuck them into your coat - the wind here gets so strong that it will fly away/whip up and totally cover your face. You do not want this to happen in the middle of an intersection.
- Shoes: Get yourself some waterproof shoes, preferably with ankle coverage and excellent traction. Being the person to totally wipe out on the sidewalk is not ideal.

The Lookout: Wall Street, Asheville NC
Here I am in the streets of Asheville. It's freezing outside, but I decided to layer up with a few warm tones to even things out a bit. Let's start off with details of my outfit from head to toe.
My hair, lol. If you don't know me you don't know that I'm growing my hair out. It used to be shaved on all sides with a bush of curls on top. I've had lots of people ask me who does my hair and where I get my hair from. I get my hair from a beauty supply store called Venus. They don't have a website, but they're located at Suite D, 891 Patton Ave, Asheville, NC 28806. The person that does my hair is a friend of mine, so if you want to get in contact with her you have to get in contact with me. She is great and charges affordable prices.

I wish I could have gotten a better picture of my shirt for you guys. Don't worry, I'll wear it again when it gets warmer and you'll have a complete 360 view! It's from Zara by the way. Over the holiday season, I was shopping for an outfit for the New Year celebration and stumbled across this jacket at Forever21. I've been wanting to grab one of these bomber jackets for the longest time. I've always been a fan of them. My sister is 12 years older than me and used to be a tomboy. When I was a lot younger and she was my age, she sported an oversized classic of one of these. The all black with the orange on the inside. I am so glad this jacket has made it's way back to the timeline. The bomber is always my first pick when out and about.
In the brown paper bag is our first giveaway. Keep reading to see where it's from!
My pants are from H&M. Am I the only person that wonders what those letters stand for? If you know, please let me in on the lowdown. Ion like being left out. I really enjoy wearing these pants. They are slightly darker than the normal olive tent, but I absolutely love this color. These pants are high wasted, have a nice comfortable feel and hug your curves in all the right ways.
I was shopping in Old Navy before their Black Friday sale when I found these double wrap infinity scarves. I picked up a grey one and a burgundy one. They were a little pricey for me, but a discount was included so it ended up being good enough for me. I proceeded to check out and headed to Target. I headed for the lane where they have really cute cheap, but handy gadgets and crafts. And boom! I spotted this super cute infinity scarf! It was grey and 5 bucks! I think you guys can figure out what I did from there.
Underneath that scarf I wore my classic choker with my hamsa hand choker purchased at Gypsy Creations.
My bracelet came in a pack of two and was a gift from my mother. They go with almost anything I wear. These yellow socks were added for contrast to my outfit. Two pairs for $5 from Old Navy. Originally, they're $5.95 per pair. And lastly, these are currently my favorite shoes. A nice pair of suede Reebok Classics. I ordered these online from Urban Outfitters.
Hearing the words Wall Street, I think of the stock markets in New York City. Literally, that is all that would come to mind until I set foot on Wall Street in Asheville, North Carolina.
If you've never been there, it's located across the street directly facing Urban Outfitters in the center of the city. Wall Street is magical. There are lots of local businesses that thrive from the support from of its people and thousands of tourists who travel through.
Appalachian Naturals is a store owned by a deeply rooted Appalachian Family. They focus to produce pure, high quality, 100% Natural Soap and Skin Care products using traditional mountain techniques that have been passed down through their family generations. Their products DO NOT contain any chemicals, preservatives, petroleums, paragons, phthalates, sodium laurel/th sulfates, fragrances or artificial colors. Their products are composed of all natural and a large variety of essential oils, herbs, spices and botanicals.
When you walk into the store, it's such a warm atmosphere. The owner is a really nice gentleman and an awesome person to talk to! It's definitely a place to invade.

What to Wear this S/S 2016
Okay, so I definitely have a twist to my style and I love it because it's what makes me! But I do have to admit that my style is not completely original. No one today is original. Okay, that's a lie. The Weeknd is original. The Canadian _____ (insert genre of music) star literally created his own genre of music! I'm still waiting for the release of its name. He's got to hurry up with that one. But that's music and I'm talking fashion here, so yeah, no one today is original. My style is constantly influenced by what has been, what is and what will be. We all know fashion has that cycle of repeating itself, whether it's span is long or short, it still makes it to the chart.
Let's talk about all the sweet trends that will be reappearing this year.
According to ELLE Magazine, these are all the trends they spotted on the runway for the upcoming seasons. Well some of them. These are my favorites from their favorites.
1. Paperbag Waist
According to ELLE Magazine, these are all the trends they spotted on the runway for the upcoming seasons. Well some of them. These are my favorites from their favorites.
1. Paperbag Waist
I'm sure you get it. Squeeze a paper bag and it ends up looking like the waist bands of these garments. These were two of my favorites. On the left is by designer, Phillip Lim and on the right is by designer, Tibi.
2. Spanish Influences
I really like this one because it reminds me one of my utmost favorite designer, Dolce & Gabbana. Why my fav? It's the authenticity that comes from it. It's real and they always bring so much detail into each custom piece. Proenza Schouler is the designer on the left, Diane von Furstenberg is center, and Michael Kors is on the right.
3. Suede
Once again suede has made it to the list! This one caught my eye because it's the prettiest pastel ever created! And the fringes. Let's not forget the fringes, another thing trending this S/S16. This whole outfit has a complete 70's vibe, the decade I should've lived in my adolescence. Rebecca Minkoff won me over with this one.
4. The X-Factor
Well duh they call this one the X-Factor, what else would you call it? The Criss-Cross??? No. That's so not intimidating. I love these daring looks. They take me back to the Greek/Roman Empire women. But of course these have a complete different twist. Lol, get it? Designer on the left is Givenchy, another one of my favorites, ADEAM is the designer for the piece in the middle, and Derek Lam is the designer on the right.
5. The Flat Mule
Alright now, what do these remind you of? I hope you said Chinese slippers. And not the actual ones, but these actual ones:
Re-occuring trends with completely different designs. Man, I love fashion.
Designers/Brands left to right: Trademark, Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham, Edun.
6. The Color of the Season
Yes, y'all! It's orange. And that's all I got to say.
Designers left to right: Dion Lee, Adam Selman, Baja East, Veronica Beard, Altuzzara.
But to continue, ELLEs team named quite a few things that were specific trends. I'm going to point out a few things that were a little bit more obvious to me.
1. Loose clothes, literally nothing was skin tight
2. Flowing garments
3. Rectangular silhouettes
4. Bright colors
5. Bold prints
6. Detail, lots of detail
7. High neck lines
If you ask me, it seems our clothes are becoming more modest and less provocative. That makes me happy. Bye bad biddies!
Jk, I can't be eliminated.
Jk, I can't be eliminated.

Style Profile: Tyler, the Creator
“Can we add some more color? Um, like, some more, yellow? Yeah, that's good.”
You may not realize it, but Tyler, the Creator is a fashion icon, aside from having one of the best ears for music in the industry. He and his crew are responsible for a lot of the hypebeast sell outs of brand like Supreme, Thrasher and Bape. He the nigga that isn't afraid of colors. Colors that in the past have been looked at as “gay” or soft. Bright colors, you know nigga, them yellows and pastels. They don't exist in the rap world. Kanye and Cam’ron got that pink to pop but that was about it.
Stripes, checkerboard, polka dots. All the shit I would have never worn but somehow Tyler got to look good. The best things about these fire jawns he puts on is it's just stupid shit that comes up in his head. It's what he wants to wear. Evolving from cat prints in 2013 that sold like heat rock. Golf Wang was just rapper merch at that point, but like his music, his clothing evolved. He has never been a regular nigga, which has been a major part of his appeal to the youth.

Taking classic looks and branding it with his own crude drawings or logos. Parodic yet respectable.
Recently, over the last two years it seems as if the merch has transformed into a label with more mature, wearable fashion. Shortening itself as just GOLF for branding and it looks good on t-shirts.
I really think Golf Wang has the potential and exclusivity to be as influential as Supreme, one of Tyler's favorite brands. He even has his arms reached out to touch into collabs with Vans for shoes. Very impressive, rappers are really the new athletes but that's content for another week.

Now to his personal style. Usually wearing his own brand, one way he keeps himself separated from wearing the exact same thing as you simpletons is his jewelry. You gotta wear something you know these broke boys can't afford. As everyone growing up in the 2000's era, he was exposed to bling. Every rapper had on two, three gold chains in every video. In the last decade it has lost its creativity. Besides T-Pain's 'Big Ass Chain' and Ross' bust chain its all been just gold. No yellow diamonds, no color, and that's what Tyler has made a name on.
His ring that he wears on his hand is a bold statement in itself. Yellow gold and an aqua diamond actually inspired me to get one similar. All black because that's my shit, but the same design. Tyler's individuality has set himself apart from a lot of people in his lane.

Tyler has taken regular shit and turned it into fire ass cult jawns. I gotta applaud the guy. I am a fan of his boldness. Go buy some shit, stop being basic.

A Complete Guide to Thrifting Clothes and Still Looking Good
Part One: Why Should I Thrift?
You know what I love? Clothes? You know what I really love? Not spending money on clothes. Maybe you haven’t noticed recently, but full-priced clothing is expensive. And when you’re a broke post-grad who buys snacks in the vending machine with quarters you found in the couch, it’s pretty hard to justify spending $34.99 on a pre-ripped, see-through T-shirt. (I’m looking at you, Urban Outfitters.) I’d rather spend my money on oh, I don’t know, experiences? Like, I want to look cool, but I’d rather take road trips and drink cocktails with multiple ingredients.
That being said, my passion for consumerism knows no limits. I must have not only the road trips and cocktails, but also a killer wardrobe. I need it all, damn it, and I’m not embarrassed! How do I indulge my vanity on a budget? The answer, my friend, is thrifting, and I’m here to teach you how to do it. Consider me your spirit guide. I will gently and powerfully guide you through bargain bins full of 80s tracksuits and embroidered turtlenecks that smell like jolly ranchers to where the good stuff is, and help you curate a better wardrobe for a fraction of the price you’d spend elsewhere. Better yet, all you need is twenty bucks, hand sanitizer, a little patience, and a TON of espresso!
One of the most important qualities to be a smart shopper and a great thrifter is commitment. So real quick, before we dive into the nitty gritties of how and where, let’s review a few of the reasons about why this should be your new lifestyle.
Wait… Why Should I Be Thrift Shopping?
- Because capitalism sucks and advertising is destroying your soul.
Need I say more? The prosperity of fashion and beauty companies literally rests on convincing you via advertising that you are fundamentally inadequate, and you would be sexier, more fun, and invited to more parties if you would just buy their clothes. Also, 90% of hip, affordable clothing is made by factory workers in third world countries who work in incredibly unsafe conditions to make those $5 crop tops we all love so much. Buying used is a really great way to be a conscious consumer and put your money where your mouth is. - Because you’ll look really cool.
Sorting through mass quantities of ugly, poorly made clothes has taught me more about what flatters my body and makes me feel good than any fashion magazine ever has. Don’t be a slave to trends! Also, never again must you endure that deeply uncomfortable moment when you walk into a room and someone is wearing the exact same Target dress that you are. - But if you happen to be into Target dresses, guess what? Thrift stores have them too.
And trust me, there is nothing more obnoxious than seeing something you paid full price for last year on a rack with a tag that says $3. - Because thrift shopping is one of the easiest actions you can take towards a more ethical and environmentally conscious lifestyle.
Reduce, reuse, recycle isn’t just for your empty wine bottles. When you buy secondhand, you’re making use of things that might have otherwise gone to a landfill and not to mention, many thrift stores are also involved in charity work (Goodwill is a notable exception; this is a for-profit company).
Nothing says modern girl like looking amazing and having the savvy to back it up. Stick with me - in the next post I’ll spill all my secrets on how to sort through your closet and make a wants and needs list, the ultimate outfit to wear thrifting, a handy checklist to help you figure out whether that sweater is hot or not, and more!
Craggy Gardens
I had so much fun doing this shoot with Makeda! She is one awesome photographer. For our first shoot, we decided that we’d take it to the mountains of North Carolina. It makes it more special for you because you get to see not only my outfit, lol, but you get a glimpse of some beautiful scenery.
Craggy Gardens isn't just an overlook on the parkway.
Craggy Gardens is located at mile marker 364 heading north on the Blue Ridge Parkway, coming from downtown Asheville. If you guys are familiar with the area, we took Town Mountain Rd, passing the Cove that looks over Asheville. It’s about a 30 minute drive from there. Craggy Gardens isn’t just an overlook on the parkway. If you drive one mile further, there’s a trail that you can take. It’s not long at all and it’s very easy to hike. I’ve seen many pictures, but this was my first time taking on this trail. As you can see, this trail looks just as craggy as it sounds. It kind of reminds me of Hocus Pocus and it was definitely worth freezing my ass off! You should definitely check it out if you haven’t already. Once you get to the top of the higher look over (there’s two off the trail), there is a magnificent 360 view of mountain range! It is definitely a healing experience.
Now, about my outfit! I love to find great deals and I only have one brand that I admire more than I do any other. So you’ll hear a lot about me thrifting and a lot about Zara!
So, my dress, that cute little baby doll dress is the only item that I’m wearing from Zara. Oh, how much I love it! It’s so comfortable and I can do a lot with it. I think the next time I wear it, I might do something a little bit more sporty. I’ve had that cream sweater for a while now and I’m pretty sure I got it at either Ross or Marshalls, Americas favorite discount stores. I go through phases where I like to wear it and then I don't, so it doesn’t get old to the point where I have donate it to a local charity. I could look at the tag and tell you where I got it, but I doubt you’ll find it. However, there are plenty of places where you can find something similar.
Eight bucks! Yeah, I scored fa sho!
My shoes and my socks are from Old Navy. I’m not ashamed to say socks are from the mens section, as most of my socks and 1/3 of my wardrobe are. Old Navy always has great prices on their mens socks. One time, I got 3 packs of socks with two pairs in each for $8! Eight bucks! Yeah, I scored fa sho!
My classic choker? I got that from H&M. The other choker I’m wearing with the cute little cupcake was made by a girl I went to high school with. Her name is Kay Millar and she makes her own little jewelry and paintings to sell on her website. Her brand is called Gypsy Creations. I love ordering from her because she sends these cute 3D stickers with your order. I have them on my laptop, lol. Here’s a direct link >> www.gypsycreations.storeenvy.com << Hope you find some things ya like!
I don’t know what I was thinking when picked this outfit out. I just knew I wanted wear this cute dress and I wanted to pair it with my burgundy socks and that the boots gave it a nice edge. I put the cream sweater on to balance all the colors out. Wallah! Magic...
